Ice hockey has a special place in the hearts of Canadians. One of the reasons why it is so popular in the country is the climate. The international Ice Hockey Federation has 69 members today but the majority of all prices have been won by a small number of national teams- namely those of Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Slovakia, Sweden and the US.
According to official statistics hockey is the most played sport in Canada with more than 1.65 participants. Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, and Edmonton have representative teams in the NHL. Furthermore, there are more Canadian players in the NHL that from any other country.
The modern Canadian men’s national ice hockey team was created in 1963. Up to this point the country was represented by senior amateur club teams on major events. The Team Canada holds the highest number of Winter Olympic gold medals for ice hockey- 8. The most recent one was in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver where the team defeated the United States in the final.
